Access 2003 Introduction (1 Day)
Brief Outline:
This course is for those starting 'from scratch' with Access and so concentrates on the basics in creating, editing and formatting a database. You will learn database terms such as ‘field’, ‘record’ and ‘query’. You will learn about the planning process for setting up a database, and then how to set it up in Access.
Exercises are then carried out on how to create and format the database fields, how to enter data and create records, as well as importing data. You will create and format simple forms and reports, and understand how Access works 'behind the scenes'. A number of exercises cover Queries, what they are, and how they work, including creating basic and more advanced examples.
Finally, how to link tables together and why is an important aspect of the introductory course.
Detailed Outcomes:
By the end of your learning, you will be able to:
- Describe the Access screen layout.
- Plan a database.
- State meanings of database terms - primary key, fields, relational.
- Add fields to create a database.
- Create simple forms.
- Enter data to create records.
- Import data from other programs.
- Find, sort and navigate data.
- Create and format simple reports.
- Create simple queries to extract data.
- Create reports based on queries.
- Link tables together.

Customising forms and reports is covered, and forms and subforms are created to show you how to improve the functionality of your database.
You will learn how to make your database more user-friendly. Examples include adding command buttons, drop downs and check boxes. You will also learn how to create a 'front-end' menu system to more easily deploy your database.
Detailed Outcomes:
By the end of your learning, you will be able to:
- Revise the basics and shortcuts in using an Access database.
- Create more tables and link them.
- Use queries to combine tables.

There is an introduction to macros and VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) for Access, which allows you to implement more advanced controls and features into your databases.
You will create specific examples of database coding such as entering data that automatically populates other fields. You will create drop downs with content that will update automatically.
Detailed Outcomes:
